We are pleased to present In the Garden, a multidisciplinary exhibition featuring artwork inspired by the garden in graphite drawings, paintings, prints and sculpture. Many of the artists are gardeners themselves, some are master- gardeners; all are keen observers of nature. In this exhibition, the bonding of nature and art is apparent.
Like art, successful gardens have strong design bones incorporating symmetry, color and texture. The garden is both a meditative and spiritual space, a place in which to contemplate nature in all its cycles. Gardens are appreciated for their passages of beauty, as well as growth and renewal, decay and decomposition.
Featured in this exhibition are sculptural works in metal and glass by WVU professor Alison Helm, towering wind chimes and hand forged steel works by Spencer native Jeff Fetty. VA Tech professor Steve Bickley fabricates functional outdoor benches in metal and marble as well as large-scale abstract sculpture for garden placement. Painters Anne Shreve, Sally Bowring, Elizabeth Geiger, Ginger Levant, Diana Suttenfield, Ann Lyne, and Amy Varner contribute representational and abstract imagery inspired by the garden. Shreve and Suttenfield are West Virginia artists, Bowring reaches at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, and Levant teaches at the Parsons School of Design in New York City. Print-makers Barrie Kaufman of Charleston, Michael Mazur of Boston and Aline Feldman of Washington, DC exhibit unique color woodblock prints inspired by nature, gardens and ponds. Lastly, Charleston artist Amanda Jane Miller contributes detailed botanical graphite drawings.
