The Callen McJunkin is pleased to present an exhibition of 2008 paintings by Marshall University Professor Stanley Sporny. Sporny grapples with complex visual subject matter, rendering it faithfully, while maintaining an expressive use of brush marks and symbolic color. These new paintings continue to explore the intricate qualities of surface tension between air, water and submerged matter. Conceptually significant for its restorative properties and native energy, water exists in Sporny's paintings as a permeable membrane, reflecting and affecting light and color. The water's surface reacts to light and color in such a way that it reveals both what is above and below. The exhibition continues through November 8, 2008 at the downtown gallery location in the loft over Stray Dog Antiques at 219 Hale St., Charleston. Gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday 11-5 pm and anytime by appointment. The Downtown Art Walk is Thursday, October 16th, 5-8pm. All events are free. The gallery offers free parking at the Huntington Banks garage across the street with gallery validation.
